Front and Rear Crosses
Author:
Stacy Peardot-Goudy In competition we see all sorts of poorly executed crosses and dogs that don't fully understand their handlers' cues for crosses. The results are often spins, off-courses, dropped bars, wasted strides, unnecessary stress on the dog's body, and even decreased motivation because flow is interrupted or the dog is unsure about what the handler wants. A properly executed, well-timed front or rear cross should lead to a seamless change of side, completed without noticeable hesitation in the dog's forward movement. If the cue for the cross is delivered in a timely fashion, the dog will already be flexing or turning in the new direction as he completes the obstacle before the turn. This allows the dog to jump efficiently and safely because he is already on the correct lead for the new direction. To achieve this, the dog must be trained in the specifics of the cross itself and he must understand all body language and any verbal cues that are associated with a front cross and a rear cross. This DVD covers all of the steps involved in teaching front and rear crosses. Stacy's training methods are appropriate for puppies, dogs that need to be retrained, and all stages in between.

Get on the Ball
Author:
Debbie Gross Saunders Would you like to improve your dog's core strength, balance, flexibility, tone, and endurance? Whether you have a healthy competition-level performance dog, a dog recovering from an injury, or a new pup, TheraBall work is an extremely useful cross-training activity—and, it's something you can do in the comfort of your living room regardless of the weather. Exercising on the TheraBall strengthens your dog's core (the muscles in his trunk and abdomen). For dogs that do agility, core strength is vital to help prevent injuries and to improve the dog's ability to collect and control his body for jumping, turning, and running. Better core strength also provides better support for your dog's back. But that's just part of the benefits. A regular TheraBall exercise routine also improves your dog's balance and kinesthetic awareness (essential to dogs traversing contact obstacles in agility), increases the dog's range of motion and flexibility, improves the dog's reflexes, and leads to increased muscle tone and endurance. This DVD provides three easy-to-follow programs for your dog—beginner, intermediate, and advanced—as well as an introductory program for puppies. There are also separate forelimb and hind-limb strengthening programs that you can use to address specific problems.

Go the Distance Vol. 1
Subtitle:
Training Your Dog to Work Away Whether you're trying to get your Velcro dog to move a few feet away from you or many yards, Stacy Peardot-Goudy's exercises for training distance work in the Go the Distance Vol. 1 DVD will help. Distance work is a key element of success in any agility venue. While it is obviously critical preparation for Gamblers, the fact is that you cannot run your dog in the upper levels of the Standard and Jumpers classes in any venue if you and your dog are joined at the hip. The ingredients in the recipe for distance work that transform the dog working close with comfort and reliability to the dog that works at a distance with comfort and reliability are experience and confidence. In this series of videos, all exercises begin with you handling at a modest distance away from the dog, gradually adding distance over time as the dog becomes comfortable and reliable at each stage. The exercises, which are based on the book of the same name, can easily be tailored to any level of dog.

In FOCUS Beginning Obstacle Skills
Author:
Deborah Jones, Ph.D. & Judy Keller In this DVD, Deborah Jones, Ph.D., and Judy Keller demonstrate the application of their FOCUS program while introducing a puppy or a "green" dog to agility obstacles. The ultimate goal of focused obstacle training is to help your dog develop a clear understanding of how to negotiate each obstacle fluently and consistently on a single cue. We want the dog to display confident and independent obstacle skills. We accomplish this by training for understanding and enjoyment at each stage before adding further challenges. The program is divided into three sections. First you will work on your basic training skills such as getting behaviors to happen and shaping behaviors. Next you will work on basic behaviors and exercises that lay the groundwork for future obstacle performance. These foundation skills are designed to increase your dog's confidence, curiosity, boldness, and body awareness. Finally, you will work through the initial stages of training the tunnel, chute, tire, contact obstacles, and weave poles. This DVD will not take you through to the finished product; rather, it will prepare you and your dog for more advanced obstacle training. If you follow the ideas and suggestions presented here, your dog will have a solid foundation for the challenges that lie ahead in agility training and trialing. Your dog will learn to love the agility obstacles, not just tolerate them. He will learn to have fun and stay focused while he works with you because he wants to, not because he has to. About the AuthorsDeborah Jones, Ph.D. and Judy Keller developed the FOCUS program in 2003. This program is designed to help trainers form a good working relationship with their performance dogs. Deb has an academic background in learning theory and social behavior. She is also an innovator in the use of the clicker in dog training. Judy has been on the AKC Agility World Team three times, winning team gold in 1998. Both Deb and Judy share a strong commitment to using training methods that are positive and gentle, yet are also efficient and effective.

In FOCUS Need for Speed DVD
Author:
Deborah Jones, Ph.D. & Judy Keller Sometimes a dog doesn't show as much enthusiasm about doing agility as we would like him to. The dog may lack confidence or he may be inhibited, worried, or nervous, which in turn lead to slow and tentative performances. Often this type of dog is very accurate, but too slow to make course time. He is trying so hard, but his stress and nervousness makes it impossible for him to let loose and enjoy himself. There is a lot that you can do to change your dog's reaction to agility so that you can both have fun doing this sport. This DVD contains a training program for the need-for-speed dog that is intended to be done after you have completed the work in the FOCUS Foundation DVD. If you consistently apply the FOCUS exercises and techniques, you will see an improvement in your dog's attitude and desire to work—but it won't happen overnight, it takes time and consistent effort.

In this video production, Leslie Nelson shares her step-by-step technique for teaching the Really Reliable Recall. This DVD includes extra chapters for difficult-to-train breeds as well as for training class instructors.

Strengthening the Performance Dog
Author:
Debbie Gross Saunders Agility and other dog sports are wonderful for your dog, but training for those sports by itself is not enough to ensure your dog’s long-term health and wellness or to keep him at his peak performance. Dogs participating in performance sports require crosstraining activities, including both a conditioning program and strengthening exercises. Doing a variety of strengthening exercises will improve your dog’s performance and, even more important, will protect him against injuries. This DVD demonstrates and explains a variety of strengthening exercises that should be part of your crosstraining program outside of agility (or any other sport-specific training). It includes exercises to improve jumping strength and power, improve collection and turning ability, increase forelimb and hind limb strength, improve balance, and increase hind-end awareness. Many of the hind-end awareness and balance exercises are appropriate even for puppies.

Author:
Joe Canova Want weaves to die for? This is the video for you. Dogs using Joe's weave pole mastery method are well known for having some of the most amazing weave pole performances in the country. Now Joe's method for creating fast and dynamic weave pole performances can be yours with this comprehensive video.
