What is Agility?

One of the fastest growing dog sports in the USA!

Agility is a sport that appeals to all dog lovers - from young people to senior citizens. It has great spectator appeal. Agility is designed to demonstrate a dog's willingness to work with its handler in a variety of situations. It is an athletic event that requires conditioning, concentration, training and teamwork. Dog and handlers negotiate a set obstacle course while racing against the clock.  The goals are to run clean (no mistakes) and to run fast!

Agility is available to every dog—from mixed breed to pure bred, from tiny Yorkshire Terriers to giant Irish Wolfhounds.  All of the dogs run the same course with adjustments in the expected time and jump height. This adjustment is done by having a variety of classes that are divided by jump heights in order to make the competition equal among the different sizes of dogs.

There are several organizations that offer agility competitions.  At Bella Vista, we offer training classes that allow dogs to be successful in events offered by the American Kennel Club, the United Kennel Club, the North American Agility Council, the Teacup Dog Agility Association, the United States Dog Agility Association and several other organizations.  While many of our students compete on a regular basis, there are others who attend classes just to have fun with their dogs!  Agility is good exercise for both the dog and the handler, and it helps to strengthen the human-canine bond
